Following the incident, police detained the building’s security guard, Enamul Haque, along with three others for questioning.
A college student was allegedly beaten and thrown into a lift shaft from the eighth floor of an under-construction building in Chattogram on Sunday (12 April), leading to his death.
Four people have been arrested so far, while drives are underway to apprehend others, confirmed Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan.
The victim, Ashfaq Kabir Sajid, 17, was a Class XI student of BAF Shaheen College in the city, the police official said.
Following the incident, police detained the building's security guard, Enamul Haque, along with three others for questioning.
After initial interrogation, the police official said they found indications of ragging involvement.
The alleged main planner, Aiman, was later arrested from the Chawkbazar area.
The other arrestees are Miskatul, Enamul Haque, and another security guard, Enayet Ullah, Hossain said.
The victim's father, Abul Hashem Sikdar, filed a murder case with Chawkbazar Police Station on Tuesday (14 April), naming seven accused and referring to five to six unidentified individuals.
According to the case statement, Ashfaq's friend, Fardin Hasan, called him in the afternoon and asked him to come to the Mousumi Residential Area point on Bakalia Access Road.
While he was there, a group including Aiman, Anik, Rana Michael, Ilias, Enayet Ullah, and Miskatul Qayes allegedly threatened him with sharp weapons and forcibly took him away.
In an attempt to escape, Ashfaq entered a nearby under-construction building, locked the gate from inside, and ran up to the eighth floor, the case files said.
When the attackers pushed the gate, security guard Enamul Haque opened it, allowing them to enter.
They then went upstairs, assaulted him, and eventually threw him into the lift shaft from the eighth floor, according to the case files.
He was later rescued in a critical condition and taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
