The arrestee is identified as Minhaz Uddin Rahim, 21
The Detective Branch (DB-West) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police has recovered a foreign-made pistol that was looted from the Double Mooring Police Station in Chattogram and arrested one person in connection with the incident.
The arrestee is identified as Minhaz Uddin Rahim, 21.
He was detained around 2:30am today (14 April) from in front of House No 3 on a lane in the Moti Jharna area under Khulshi police station, according to a press briefing held at the CMP Police Lines.
According to DB-West, the arrest was made based on intelligence information under the direction of the Police commissioner during a special operation.
In preliminary interrogation, Minhaz said that on 5 August 2024, he and his absconding associate Amir Hossain entered the Double Mooring Police Station and looted a foreign pistol.
He further said that the weapon was later used in various criminal activities and was eventually sold to Amir Hossain for Tk50,000.
Acting on his information, DB conducted a raid at Amir Hossain's rented house at Tola Pukur Par in the Salek Ahmed Colony of the Lalkhan Bazar area under Khulshi, but he managed to flee sensing the presence of law enforcement.
During the search, police recovered a functional 9mm foreign-made pistol from a red shopping bag hidden under the tin roof of the house.
The firearm bears the markings "TKT22473", "TH9 9x19" and "Taurus S.A. MADE IN BRAZIL".
The recovered weapon has been identified as the looted official pistol from Double Mooring Police Station, according to the arrested suspect.
Police also said that fugitive Amir Hossain is an accused in a murder case filed with Kotwali Police Station in 2012.
A case under the Arms Act is being prepared against both Minhaz Uddin Rahim and the absconding Amir Hossain at Khulshi Police Station.
Deputy Commissioner of Police of DB-West, Mohammad Mahbub Alam Khan, said that intelligence operations have been intensified to curb crime and efforts are underway to arrest the fugitive accused.
He further added that Minhaz is a professional snatcher and has long been involved in criminal activities using the firearm.
Police are also investigating whether he is linked to any organised criminal group.
