Shopkeeper stabbed to death in Rajshahi over denying extortion money, suspect detained
A grocery shopkeeper was stabbed to death today (17 April) in the Council Bazar area of Puthia Upazila in Rajshahi after refusing to pay extortion money.
The victim, Mamunur Rashid Jewel, 48, a resident of Krishnapur village, was attacked around 6:30am while he was in his shop, according to local sources and police.
Witnesses said that Md Mainul, 23, son of Kamal from Kathalbari village, entered the shop and demanded money, allegedly for drug use. When Jewel refused, an argument broke out between the two, which quickly escalated into a scuffle.
At one point, Mainul stabbed Jewel in the chest with a knife, leaving him critically injured.
Locals rushed him to Puthia Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, locals chased and caught the suspect. An angry mob reportedly beat him and tied him to a pillar in the shop.
Police later arrived and rescued Mainul from the crowd before taking him into custody.
Puthia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faridul Islam said the suspect is being interrogated and the body has been sent for autopsy.
Police are preparing to file a case in connection with the incident, he added.
