Police constable murder: 10 snatchers sentenced to life in Chattogram
The convicts were locally known as Jubo League activists and members of an organised snatching gang
A Chattogram court sentenced 10 members of a snatching gang to life imprisonment for killing police constable Abdul Kaiyum, who was on security duty at the DIG bungalow in the city's Khulshi area.
Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman delivered the verdict today (12 January).
The court also fined each convict Tk25,000. In default of payment, they will have to serve an additional six months in prison. The court ordered that the fine money be paid to the victim's family.
According to the verdict, the convicts were locally known as Jubo League activists and members of an organised snatching gang.
Among the 10 convicts, Tapan Chandra Sarkar, Arshal alias Rasel, Md Sohel and Md Babul are currently in jail. The remaining six fugitive convicts are – Md Jabed, Nurul Alam, Suman Mollah, Harun Or Rashid, Mintu Das and Faruk alias Bullet Faruk are absconding. The court issued arrest warrants against the fugitives.
The incident took place on 3 November 2013 in the Bhatali Hill area under Khulshi Police Station, where two youths Jewel and Yusuf Ali Khan were robbed. Hearing their screams, five police constables deployed at the DIG bungalow chased the snatchers.
During the chase, other members of the gang launched a sudden attack on the police with sharp weapons. Constable Abdul Kaiyum was fatally injured, while three other constables Ariful Islam, Sahabuddin and Salauddin sustained serious injuries.
Following the incident, a case was filed with Khulshi Police Station against 11 accused. After a prolonged investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against 10 of them.
Court assistant Mohammad Sahed said the prosecution proved the charges under Section 396 of the Penal Code, leading the court to hand down the life sentences.
