Order on Zubaida Rahman’s leave to appeal on 8 April

The hearing on BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman's wife Zubaida Rahman's leave to appeal application has ended. She made the application against the High Court's verdict that ordered to continue the proceedings of a case filed against her by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

On Thursday, a three-judge virtual appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain set 8 April for declaring whether the court will accept Zubaida's application or not.

Lawyer Md Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the ACC in the court, while lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali appeared for Zubaida.

The ACC filed the case against Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman and mother-in-law Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu at Kafrul police station on 26 September, 2008 on charges of concealing and giving false information about assets worth Tk4.81 crore. In that case, Zubaida and her mother were accused of helping Tarique and concealing information against him.

The ACC filed a charge-sheet in the case on 31 March, 2008. However, when Zubaida applied for dismissal of the case, the High Court issued a rule suspending the proceedings of the case.

At one stage, the chief justice sent the case to the High Court bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Devnath for disposal. Later, after hearing the rule in this bench, the High Court dismissed the rule that halted the proceedings of the case, and ordered to continue it.

That verdict also ordered Zubaida to surrender to the court within eight weeks. Later, Zubaida filed a leave to appeal application seeking permission to appeal against that verdict.
