A local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has died after 10 days of treatment following a clash between activists of Jamaat and BNP in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga.
The deceased, Mafizur Rahman, 42, ameer of Banka union Jamaat, succumbed to his injuries around noon today (10 March) while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital, raising the death toll from the 28 February clash to two.
Confirming the matter, Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Solaiman Sheikh told The Business Standard that legal procedures are underway. "His body will be sent for autopsy after the inquest."
Earlier, Mafizur Rahman was critically injured in a clash between activists of Jamaat and BNP at Hasadah Bazar in Jibannagar on the evening of 28 February.
On the same day, Mafizur's brother Hafizur Rahman, 45, also a Jamaat activist, died on the way to Dhaka.
According to locals, tensions had been brewing between Sohag, son of Jamaat supporter Keramat Ali of Sutia village, and Mehedi, son of Hasadah union Swechchhasebak Dal leader Jasim Uddin. Both sides were scheduled to hold a meeting at Hasadah Bazar on the night of 28 February to settle the dispute.
However, an argument and scuffle broke out in the evening, which later turned into a violent clash. At least six people from both sides were injured in the incident.
The injured were first taken to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Jashore General Hospital. As their condition deteriorated, Mafizur and Hafizur were referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Chuadanga district Jamaat's Publicity and Publication Secretary Mafizur Rahman Joarder earlier alleged that several people led by a local Krishak Dal leader attacked Jamaat activists with locally made weapons, leaving four of their leaders and activists seriously injured.
Meanwhile, Chuadanga district BNP Organisational Secretary Khalid Mahmud Milton claimed the clash occurred after Jamaat activists allegedly attacked the house of a Jubo Dal leader earlier, prompting BNP activists and their associate organisations to retaliate.
