Khaleda motorcade attack: Ex-DU deputy registrar's bail cancelled a day after being granted
The court had previously granted Lovelu bail yesterday (26 April) against a bond of Tk1,000, but the defence lawyers could not submit it in due time
A Dhaka court today (27 April) cancelled the bail of former Dhaka University (DU) deputy registrar Muhammad Lovelu Mollah Shishir in a case involving an attack on former prime minister Khaleda Zia's motorcade.
The order was passed by Judge Md Wahiduzzaman of the 17th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka, just a day after the official had initially been granted bail in the same case.
The court had previously granted Lovelu bail yesterday (26 April) against a bond of Tk1,000, but the defence lawyers could not submit it in due time.
However, the documents were put on the slate this morning but the court rejected the application.
Bench Assistant Md Ashraful Amin confirmed that although the lawyers attempted to file the bond today, the court rejected the submission and ordered the cancellation of Lovelu's bail.
Lovelu, a former president of the Masterda Surja Sen Hall unit of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, was detained by students and the university's proctorial team on 17 November last year.
The detention followed a controversial Facebook post where he shared a photo card of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina with the caption "I Don't Care" and the slogan "Joy Bangla," shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced her to death for crimes against humanity.
Following his handover to Shahbagh Police Station, he was "shown arrested" as a suspect in the 2015 attack on Khaleda Zia.
The charges against Lovelu stem from an incident on 22 April 2015, when the then-BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was campaigning for a mayoral candidate in the Dhaka North City Corporation polls.
Prosecutors alleged that a pre-planned attack was carried out on her motorcade at the Banglamotor intersection while heading towards Shahbagh, resulting in the vandalism of nearly 14-15 vehicles and injuries to her security personnel.
While the incident occurred nearly a decade ago, the formal case was only filed with the police station on 23 November 2024.
