Journalist Anis Alamgir’s bail hearing set for 8 March
Dhaka court has set 8 March for journalist Anis Alamgir’s bail hearing in an ACC case over alleged illegal wealth and money laundering.
A Dhaka court has set 8 March for the bail hearing of journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of acquiring wealth illegally and money laundering.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Faiz fixed the date today (1 March), following a petition by the prosecution.
Defence counsel Taslima Jahan Popy confirmed the matter, saying she hopes Anis Alamgir will secure bail on that day.
On 14 December last year, Anis was taken into custody by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) after coming out of a gymnasium located at Dhanmondi-2 in the capital.
He was later taken to the DB office for questioning.
The following day, he was placed on a five-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Uttara West Police Station.
After completion of the remand, he was sent to jail on 20 December.
Subsequently, on 15 January, the ACC filed a case against Anis on charges of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income and money laundering.
On 25 January, the investigation officer and ACC Assistant Director Akhteruzzaman applied to show him arrested in this case.
Following a hearing, the court granted the application.
