ACC approves case against former Padma Bank MD, 9 others over loan fraud
ACC probe finds forged documents were used to secure loan.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved filing a case against 10 people, including former Padma Bank PLC Managing Director Abdul Motaleb Patwari, over allegations of obtaining a Tk1.9 crore loan using forged documents.
ACC Public Relations Officer Aktarul Islam confirmed the development today (23 August).
He said the case was approved following an investigation into allegations that the accused forged documents and used fraudulent means to obtain a loan of around Tk1.9 crore in the complainant's name.
The other accused are Md Mominur Rahman, proprietor of MH Enterprise; former senior vice president and branch manager George Cornelius Gomes; former credit in-charge and officer Md Russell Mia; former manager of operations and assistant vice president M Atif Khaled; former first assistant vice president Amena Begum; former branch manager Mohammad Shamsul Hasan Bhuiyan; former manager of operations Mahbub Ahmad; former credit in-charge and officer Md Kawser Hossain; and Md Ajit Ullah.
According to ACC documents, the commission approved filing the case under Sections 409, 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the Penal Code; Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947; and Section 4(2) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
The ACC had earlier appointed an investigation officer and a director from its banking wing as the supervising officer to investigate the allegations related to the Tk1.9 crore loan.
The investigation was conducted in accordance with the ACC Act, 2004 and ACC Rules, 2007. The investigating officials were later instructed to submit their report along with relevant documents.
After reviewing the investigation report and supporting documents, the commission approved filing a regular case against the accused.
The ACC has also instructed the concerned officials to file the first information report and submit a copy, along with the relevant records, to the commission.
The ACC documents also mention the alleged involvement of the accused bank officials in the loan approval and disbursement process at the concerned Padma Bank branch.
