Jamaat, BNP candidates file petitions challenging election results in 5 constituencies
Under Section 49 of the Representation of the People Order, election tribunals are constituted in the High Court to hear petitions alleging electoral irregularities.
Five more losing candidates – four from the Jamaat-e-Islami and one from the BNP – have filed petitions with the High Court challenging the results of the 13th general election in their respective constituencies.
The hearings on these petitions will be held today before the single bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain.
The petitioners are Jamaat candidates Md Ilyas Mollah from Narayanganj-2; Iqbal Hossain Bhuiyan from Narayanganj-3; Md Firoz Haider from Lalmonirhat-2; Anwarul Islam Raju from Lalmonirhat-1; and BNP Joint Secretary General and candidate Syed Emran Saleh Prince from Mymensingh-1.
Earlier, at different times, BNP candidates Sohel Hossain Kaykobad (Kurigram-2), Md Saiful Islam (Rangpur-6), Md Emdadul Haque Bhorsa (Rangpur-4), Major General (retd) Md Sharif Uddin (Rajshahi-1), DMD Ziaur (Rajshahi-4), Md Habibur Rahman Habib (Pabna-4) and Sansila Jebrin (Sherpur-1), as well as Jamaat candidates Md Abdul Mannan (Dhaka-6), Md Enayet Ullah (Dhaka-7) and Md Abdur Rahim Sarkar (Gaibandha-4), filed similar petitions.
The court accepted those petitions for hearing and ordered that the ballot papers of the respective constituencies be taken from the returning officers concerned and preserved by the Election Commission.
