ICT orders completion of investigation within a month in the killing of Yamin who was thrown from APC in Savar

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has ordered the completion of the investigation and submission of the report within one month in a case of the killing of Shaikh Ashabul Yamin, who was shot dead by police and thrown from an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 18 July 2024 in Dhaka's Savar.
The order was given by the three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder today (12 August), which was the previously scheduled date for submission of the investigation report in this case. .
The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for 14 September.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim represented the prosecution during the hearing. He requested an additional month to submit the investigation report. After hearing the request, the tribunal approved the extension and set a new date for the next hearing. The prosecution stated that the report might be submitted before the deadline.
Fifteen people have been accused in the case, including four police officers. The rest are members of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations. Seven accused are currently in custody, while eight remain absconding.
On the morning of the hearing, seven accused were brought to the tribunal in prison vans by the police. The tribunal had previously fixed the hearing date on 14 July and ordered the accused to be produced in court.
On 18 July last year, Ashabul Yamin, a fourth-year computer science and engineering student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), was shot dead by police during a movement near the Savar Bus Stand area.
Police and Awami League activists attacked a peaceful protest at Savar Bazar bus stand that day. Yamin was dragged to an armoured police vehicle and shot in the left chest. He was thrown onto the vehicle, which was then driven around to intimidate protesters.
Near death, Yamin was left on the road. A police officer was ordered to shoot his leg again but did not, believing he was already dead.
Locals later found him breathing and took him to Enam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
