Charge framing hearing against Hasina, 33 others in July uprising murder case deferred
Former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak says he suffered a neck injury during transport from court and seeks permission to undergo an MRI scan and receive treatment.
A Dhaka court today (28 April) deferred the charge framing hearing against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 33 others in a case filed over the killing of truck driver Md Hossain in the city's Mohammadpur area during the July uprising.
Judge Robiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 fixed 21 May as the new date for the hearing following a petition filed by the defence seeking more time.
Earlier in the morning, former ICT state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former MP Sadek Khan, Md Badiur Alam alias Badiuzzaman, and Md Forkan Hossain were produced before the court from prison.
Defence lawyers Md Tariqul Islam and Farzana Yeasmin Rakhi moved the petition seeking more time for the charge framing hearing. Upon hearing the plea, the court granted the extension.
During the proceedings, Palak told his lawyer, Farzana, that he had sustained a neck injury while being transported in a prison van from the International Crimes Tribunal back to jail on Sunday (26 April).
He wished to undergo an MRI scan and asked his lawyer to file a formal application seeking medical treatment.
"He asked me to apply to the court for necessary medical care. Due to time constraints, we could not file the petition today, but we will submit it to the court tomorrow," lawyer Farzana said.
According to the case statement, Md Hossain, a truck driver, was shot dead on 19 July 2024, in the Chand Udyan area of Mohammadpur during the anti-discrimination student movement. He was returning home after parking his truck at Gabtoli when he was shot and died on the spot.
On 31 August 2024, the victim's mother, Rina Begum, filed a murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station.
Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector Akramuzzaman submitted a charge sheet against 34 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, on 23 November 2025.
Other high-profile accused in the case include former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Hasan Mahmud, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and banned Chhatra League leaders Saddam Hussain and Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
Among the accused, Palak, former MP Sadek Khan, Forkan Hossain, and Shahjahan Khan are currently in custody.
