HC rejects Minni’s bail plea

The High Court (HC) has rejected the bail petition of Aysha Siddika Minni in a case, filed over the widely discussed murder of her husband Rifat Sharif, on Thursday.
The HC bench, consisting of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman, passed the order after the hearing on the bail petition.
The HC bench said, they could not allow Minni’s bail without having her confessional statement to Barguna court reviewed, while clarifying that under the circumstance the court can only issue a rule regarding the reason for not giving the bail, the court added.
Advocate ZI Khan Panna, Minni’s lawyer, subsequently withdrew the bail petition.
Advocate Panna appeared at the court in favor of the petitioner, while Momtaz Uddin Fakir, additional attorney general, represented the state.
On August 6, the HC deferred the hearing on the bail petition of Minni (filed on August 5) till August 8. Earlier on July 30, a Barguna court rejected her bail petition in the same case.
Police arrested Minni in connection with the murder of her husband Rifat on July 16, and the court subsequently placed her on a five-day remand.
Minni confessed her involvement in Rifat’s murder at a Barguna court on July 18. The court recorded her confessional statement, and sent her to jail next day.
A group of people hacked Rifat to death in broad daylight in front of Barguna Government College on June 26. Rifat died later of excessive bleeding, caused from the wounds from the attack.
Nayon Bond, the prime accused in the case, was killed in a “gunfight” with police on July 2.
