Why Samrat’s bail shouldn’t be scrapped: HC

The High Court (HC) on Tuesday issued a rule asking why it should not cancel the bail granted expelled Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat in a case over amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.

The HC bench of Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat issued the rule after hearing the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) petition seeking cancellation of Samrat's bail and set 23 October for the next hearing on the rule.

The state was asked to respond to the rule within two weeks.

Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC in the hearing while AKM Amin Uddin Manik stood for the state.

"The bail order given by a special Dhaka court was not lawful. Provisions of law were not followed during the hearing of these bail applications. According to the Money Laundering Prevention Act, the judicial court did not consider the gravity of his offence and therefore ACC appealed for cancellation of Samrat bail," said Khurshid Alam.

Earlier on 29 august ACC appealed against the bail order granted to the expelled Juba League leader till 19 September.

On 22 August, Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 Judge Al Asad Md Asifuzzaman granted Samrat's bail in the money laundering case considering his poor health condition on a Tk10,000 bond.

Samrat staged a show-down on 26 August while appearing in public for the first time in three days after being released on bail.

He went to Dhanmondi Road No. 32 with thousands of Jubo League leaders and workers to pay respect to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Although Samrat was expelled from the Jubo League, his showdown was attended by leaders of various levels of the Dhaka Metropolitan South and North Committees of the Jubo League.
