Former AL MP Ashika Sultana remanded for 3 days in terrorism case
Ashika Sultana was arrested from the Mirpur-11 area at around 11:50pm the previous night
A Dhaka court today (26 June) placed former Awami League reserved-seat member of parliament Ashika Sultana on a three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with the Mirpur Model Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Manjurul Islam passed the order after the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Al Mamun Hossain of Mirpur Model Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
Following a hearing, the court granted a three-day remand.
During the hearing, the prosecution argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyer Jahangir Alam opposed the plea. Public Prosecutor Azizul Haque Didar confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
Ashika Sultana was arrested from the Mirpur-11 area at around 11:50pm the previous night.
According to the case statement, a group of activists of the bannned Awami League and its student wing Chhatra League brought out an anti-government procession in the Mirpur-1 area on 19 June.
The participants allegedly fled, leaving behind banners, before police arrived at the scene. Police said they later reviewed video footage and identified the procession as one organised to mark the founding anniversary of the banned political party.
Sultana was arrested as a suspect in connection with the case.
In the remand petition, the investigation officer claimed Sultana was directly involved in the incident and was a financial backer of the Awami League, adding that she needed to be questioned to identify those who planned and led the procession and to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
