Facebook post on Hasina: DU deputy registrar sent to jail in 5-month old anti-terrorism case
After yesterday’s verdict sentencing Sheikh Hasina to death, Lavlu posted a photocard on social media expressing support for her
A Dhaka court has sent to jail Muhammad Lavlu Mollah, deputy registrar of Dhaka University, in a case filed five and a half months ago under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Shahbagh Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia passed the order after a hearing today (18 November).
After yesterday's verdict sentencing Sheikh Hasina to death, Lavlu posted a photocard on social media expressing support for her, following which DU students detained him from his residence and handed him over to Shahbagh Police Station.
Police later showed him arrested in the five-and-a-half-month-old case.
The investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Alamin of Shahbagh Police Station, produced Lavlu before the court and appealed to keep him in jail.
According to the petition, the accused previously served as the personal secretary to former DU vice-chancellor Akhtaruzzaman.
Police said sufficient evidence has been found indicating that he had been providing financial support to help carry out a banned Chhatra League flash processions and crude bomb explosions in the Shahbagh area.
It was also mentioned that a police remand petition for the accused is in process in order to identify and arrest others involved.
Meanwhile, defence lawyers Ataur Rahman Khan and GM Kawsar Ul Islam Sohel sought bail for Lavlu.
During the hearing, they argued that the case was filed five and a half months ago in connection with Awami League and affiliated organisations' procession.
After the hearing, the court rejected his bail plea and ordered to send him to jail.
