Three sent to jail for killing 20 dogs in Jatrabari in 2021
According to the case statement, the accused killed 20 dogs using iron rods, pliers and lethal injections in the Lichu Bagan area and later took the bodies away in sacks.
A court has sentenced three people to two and a half years in prison in a case filed over the killing of 20 dogs using iron rods, pliers and lethal injections in the Lichu Bagan area of Dhalpur in the capital's North Jatrabari in 2021.
The verdict was delivered today (8 March) by the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain, bench assistant Saem Uddin confirmed to The Business Standard.
The convicted are Md Abul Khayer, Md Opu and Md Manik.
According to Saem, the judge sentenced each of the convicts to six months of simple imprisonment and a fine of Tk1,000 under the Animal Welfare Act, 2019, with an additional 15 days of imprisonment in default of payment.
They were also sentenced to two years of simple imprisonment and fined Tk1,000 under the same law, with another 15 days of imprisonment in default.
The sentences will run concurrently, meaning each convict will serve two years in jail.
Convict Md Manik was present in court when the verdict was delivered and was sent to jail with a conviction warrant.
The other two convicts remain absconding, and the court issued arrest warrants against them.
According to the case statement, on 23 January 2021, the accused killed 20 dogs using iron rods, pliers and lethal injections in the Lichu Bagan area and later took the bodies away in sacks.
The accused were later identified through video footage.
