Mamun was produced before the court after completing 18 days of remand in different phases.
A Dhaka court today (13 April) sent former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed over the killing of BNP activist Makbul Hossain.
The order was passed by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam following a hearing.
Mamun was produced before the court after completing 18 days of remand in different phases.
At the hearing, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Tofazzal Hossain of the DB Police's Motijheel zone, applied to keep him in custody.
Defence lawyers Nazrul Islam Pakhi and Morshed Hossain Shahin sought bail, while the state opposed the plea.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application and ordered that Mamun be sent to jail.
Earlier, on 25 March, Mamun was arrested from his residence in Mirpur DOHS in the capital.
The following day, he was placed on a five-day remand in a case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station over the killing of Delwar Hossain during the 2024 July Uprising.
He was subsequently remanded in the same case for a further six days on 30 March and three days on 6 April.
After completing those remand periods, he was sent to jail on 9 April.
On the same day, he was shown arrested in the Makbul murder case filed with Paltan Model Police Station and granted a three-day remand.
The court later approved an additional one-day remand on 12 April.
According to the case statement, on 10 December 2022, the BNP announced a one-point movement demanding the fall of the then government.
During the programme, attacks and vandalism were carried out at the party's Naya Paltan office, and thousands of party leaders and activists gathered nearby also came under attack.
A BNP activist, Makbul Hossain, was shot and killed during the incident.
In connection with the incident, a case was filed on 30 September by Mahfuzur Rahman against 256 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
