Ex-JU prof, BCL leader Jony sent to jail in July uprising murder case
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Mohammad Saleh passed the order after a hearing, denying both the bail and remand pleas.

A Dhaka court today (23 August) sent Mahmudur Rahman Jony, former Jahangirnagar University professor and former president of the university's Chhatra League unit, to jail in a case over the killing of BNP Dhaka North unit Chhatra Dal joint convener Arifur Rahman alias Russell in Savar during the July uprising last year.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Mohammad Saleh passed the order after a hearing, denying both the bail and remand pleas, according to court sources.
Earlier in the day, Savar police produced him before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.
Jony was arrested around 3am today in a raid at a flat in Savar's Bank Town area.
According to the case document, on 5 August last year, during protests in Savar's Muktir More area, the accused shot Russell. He was later declared dead at a hospital.
On 16 September, Russell's brother filed a murder case with Savar Model Police Station, naming Jony as a suspect.
Jony also served as a former assistant proctor and assistant professor in the Department of Public Health and Informatics before being dismissed.
Last year in February, Jahangirnagar University authorities dismissed Jony following allegations that he had sexually harassed a female student.
The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam.
