Ex-DGFI director Afzal Naser placed on fresh 3-day remand in attempted murder case
The case was filed over the shooting of a Jagannath University student during July Uprising
A Dhaka court today (11 May) placed former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) director Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Afzal Naser on a fresh three-day remand in a case filed over the attempted murder of a Jagannath University student during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasibuzzaman passed the order following a hearing in the afternoon.
Public prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.
After completion of a previous three-day remand, the accused was produced before the court. Investigating officer and Kotwali Police Station sub-inspector (SI) KM Abdul Shariful Islam sought a further five-day remand for interrogation.
Following the hearing, the court granted a three-day remand.
Earlier, the court had placed Afzal Naser on a three-day remand on 5 May in the same case. Another three-day remand was granted on 8 May.
According to the case statement, Jagannath University student Anik Kumar Das was injured in a shooting allegedly carried out by activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League on 16 July 2024 during the July Uprising.
The complaint said the attack took place after a procession crossed the main gate of Jagannath University and reached the area in front of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court.
Anik was first given primary treatment at Dhaka National Medical Hospital and later received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On 21 November 2024, Anik Kumar Das filed the case with Kotwali Police Station, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 253 others as accused.
Afzal Naser was arrested by Detective Branch police from a residence in Mirpur DOHS in the capital late on 29 March.
He has since been shown arrested and remanded in multiple cases.
