DU student Mimo's death: Teacher Sudip denied bail, sent to jail
The application said primary investigations have found evidence of his involvement in the incident.
A Dhaka court has denied bail to Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor in Dhaka University's Theatre and Performance Studies Department, and sent him to jail in a case filed over the alleged instigation of the suicide of Munira Mahjabin Mimo, a student of the department.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order after a hearing today (27 April).
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case and Sub-Inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station produced the accused before the court and sought an order to keep him in custody.
Meanwhile, defence lawyer Phul Mohammad and others sought bail for the accused, arguing that he is a good teacher and has no involvement in the incident, requesting bail on humanitarian grounds. The prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application and ordered that he be sent to jail.
According to the application filed by police, while attempting to identify and arrest the accused named in the first information report (FIR), Sudip was detained from North Badda at around 3:20pm yesterday. He was later shown arrested in the case and interrogated regarding the incident.
The application said primary investigations have found evidence of his involvement in the incident, adding that the process of verifying his name and address is ongoing.
Police said it is essential to keep him in custody until the completion of the investigation for the sake of a fair probe and justice.
It further noted that a remand might be requested in the future for the interest of the investigation.
Police recovered the hanging body of DU student Munira Mahjabin Mimo from her residence in North Badda yesterday. A note was found at the scene, which read, "Tk50,000 must be given to Sudip Sir. Hani and Sudip Sir, stay well. Return the gifts given by Sir..."
Following the incident, a case was filed against Sudip on charges of instigating suicide, and he has been shown arrested in the case.
