Court grants bail to BNP leader Hafiz

A Dhaka court today granted bail to BNP Vice Chairman Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed after rejecting a remand plea in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate Atiqul Islam granted the bail around 3pm Sunday after hearing the bail petition filed by Hafiz's lawyers.
The court set November 11 for the next hearing of the case.

Police sought a seven-day remand of Hafizuddin, former water resources minister, in the court.
On Saturday, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Hafiz, along with former army official Muhammad Ishaque Mian, from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport over an allegation of running propaganda against the state.
They allegedly exchanged between themselves false, misleading, imaginary and intentional speeches about the role of different government agencies via email.
Abu Sayeed, an official of the RAB-4, filed a case against both of them with the Pallabi Police Station under sections 27, 31 and 45 of the Digital Security Act.
The sections of the Act are related to offences like endangering national security through cyber-terrorism, destroying communal harmony and aiding these offences.
