Commerce proposes 3 secretaries for Evaly liability assessment board

The commerce ministry on Wednesday proposed the names of three former secretaries to the High Court for the board that will assess the liabilities of the controversial e-commerce platform Evaly.

The High Court bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam said it will issue an order on the formation of the board next week after reviewing the proposed names.

The proposed officials are former land secretary Maksudur Rahman Patwari, former local government, rural development and co-operatives secretary Md Rezaul Ahsan, and former Land Reforms Board chairman Yakub Ali Patwari.

Earlier, the judge had said on Tuesday that the court would form a four-member board – with a former judge, a chartered accountant, a secretary and a lawyer – to assess the liabilities of Evaly.

The Tuesday announcement came fast on the heels of Monday 11 October, when all Evaly documents and records were submitted to the court as per its order at the hearing of an application filed by a disgruntled customer named Md Farhad Hossen, who sought directives for winding up the company and settling the issue. He also demanded a refund from the liquidation of Evaly's property.

On 30 September, the High Court had directed the Registrar of the Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC) to submit the papers.

Several cases have been filed against Evaly Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rassel, and his wife Shamima Nasrin, who is also the chairman of the company, on allegations of embezzlement and cheque fraud. The couple was arrested on 16 September.
