Businessman claiming to be Obaidul Quader's nephew placed on 3-day remand in murder case

A Gazipur court has placed a businessman, who claimed to be the nephew of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, on a three-day remand in a case filed over a murder during the July 2024 mass uprising.
Judge Hasinur Rahman Milon of Gazipur Senior Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-4 passed the order today (22 April).
Confirming the matter, Sreepur Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Shamim Akhter said the man, Ali Haider Ratan, was arrested from the Ramna area in Dhaka and later handed over to Gazipur police yesterday.
Sources said Ratan is the former general secretary of the Sreepur upazila unit of the Awami League. He allegedly leveraged his claimed ties to Obaidul Quader to grab land and property from numerous locals in the area. However, his actual familial connection to Quader has not been officially confirmed.
