Father gets life in jail for raping 15-year-old daughter in Gazipur

A Gazipur court has sentenced a father to life imprisonment today (23 July) for raping his 15-year-old daughter.
Judge Md Abu Bakar Siddique of the Gazipur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal pronounced the verdict in the presence of the accused, confirmed court sources.
The convict is Ripon Hossain, a resident of old Doharo Khulumbari area under Shailkupa Police Station in Jhenaidah district.

He was living with his family in the Barishaler Tek area of Madhabpur under Kashimpur Police Station in Gazipur Metropolitan.
The court also fined the convict Tk1 lakh; in default, he will have to serve an additional six months of imprisonment.
According to the case details, Ripon forcibly raped his 15-year-old daughter on the night of 27 March 2025, while she was sleeping at their residence.
Following the incident, the victim's mother, Josna Begum, filed a case against her husband at Kashimpur Police Station as the plaintiff. Police subsequently arrested the accused and produced him in court.
Upon completing the investigation, Sub-Inspector (SI) Rokon Mia of Kashimpur Police Station submitted a charge sheet to the court on 30 September last year.
Later, on May 11 this year, the court framed charges against the accused to initiate the trial. After examining seven prosecution witnesses and evaluating the presented evidence, the court delivered the verdict just two months after charge framing.
Expressing satisfaction, Public Prosecutor Advocate Mst. Selina Begum said, "The allegations brought against the accused were proven beyond a shadow of a doubt through the evidence presented in court, leading the honourable judge to pass this sentence. We are satisfied with this judgment."
On the other hand, defence lawyer Advocate Md Sohel Jamil Sarkar, appointed by Legal Aid, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, stating:
"There are contradictions and significant discrepancies in the depositions of the state's witnesses. Once we receive the full certified copy of the verdict, we will file an appeal in the High Court on behalf of the accused."
