BNP leader MA Quayum secures bail after surrender in 2015 attempted murder case
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Quayum described the legal hurdles as remnants of political harassment by the ousted Awami League government.
Dr MA Quayum, a BNP-nominated candidate for the Dhaka-11 constituency in the upcoming general election, was granted bail today (17 December), after surrendering before a Dhaka court in connection with almost a decade-old case.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman passed the order following a bail petition filed by Quayum's legal counsel.
The case, which dates back to 2015, involves allegations of attempted murder filed at the Kadamtali Police Station. According to his lawyer, Sayed Nazrul Islam, the candidate chose to surrender and seek formal bail to clear his legal standing ahead of the election.
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Quayum described the legal hurdles as remnants of political harassment by the ousted Awami League government.
"The former autocratic government [Awami League] filed numerous 'ghost' [politically motivated] cases against me. Even in the last three days, searches have uncovered two more such cases," he stated.
Quayum added that his decision to appear in court was driven by the Election Commission's requirements.
"As per the EC's directives, candidates must submit detailed documents regarding any pending cases alongside their nomination papers. Although these are ghost cases, I surrendered to comply with the law, and the court has granted me bail," he said.
The EC has set 29 December as the deadline for the submission of nomination papers for the national polls, which are scheduled to be held on 12 February 2026.
