4 sentenced to death in Barishal gang rape case
After hearing testimonies from 11 witnesses, the court issued its ruling today.
A Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal today (26 October) sentenced four individuals to death for their involvement in a gang rape case.
Judge Mohammad Rakibul Islam passed the verdict. Each defendant was also fined Tk1 lakh.
The convicts are Russell Gazi, Rajib Jamaddar, Mohammad Zahid, and Khokon Khan, with the latter currently absconding. All four are residents of the Dhan Gobeshona Road area in Barishal city.
According to public prosecutor Abdul Mannan Mirdha, on 10 November 2016, the 18-year-old victim left home with Tk1 lakh to visit Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. On the way, the auto-rickshaw driver diverted the vehicle to another location. When she cried for help, the accused attacked her and later gang-raped her in a forested area near the Christian colony in the city.
The following morning, her family rescued her and admitted her to hospital and filed a case against the four accused at Kotwali Model Police Station.
Inspector Mohammad Ataur Rahman of Kotwali Model Police Station submitted a charge sheet to the court on 23 November 2017. After hearing testimonies from 11 witnesses, the court issued its ruling today.
