24 including 9 ex-ministers, 4 ex-MPs appear virtually in court
According to court sources, bringing the accused to court often involves significant security risks
A Dhaka court has accepted the virtual appearance of 24 accused, including nine ex-ministers and four ex-MPs of the ousted Awami League government, in separate cases related to the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam today (1 September) recorded the virtual presence of the accused who are in prison, confirmed State lawyer Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Those who appeared virtually include ex-law minister Anisul Huq, ex-food minister Kamrul Islam, ex-ICT minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, ex-education minister Dr Dipu Moni, ex-information minister Hasanul Haq Inu, ex-social welfare ministers Amir Hossain Amu and Rashed Khan Menon, ex-industry minister Kamal Ahmed Majumdar, and ex-agriculture minister Abdur Razzaque.
Ex-MPs and other former officials who appeared virtually are Sadek Khan, Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, ex-justice A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, ex-home secretary Jahangir Alam, ex-IGPs Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and Shahidul Haq, ex-DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, ex-DCs Tanvir Salehin Emon and Moshiur Rahman, ex-additional police superintendent Jewel Rana, ex-AC Tanzil Ahmed, ex-SI Shahadat Ali, and ex-OC Abul Hasan.
The hearings were scheduled for cases under various police stations in the capital, including Jatrabari, Mohammadpur, Adabor, New Market, Badda, Uttara West and Kafrul.
According to court sources, bringing the accused to court often involves significant security risks. In addition, intense public anger against many of the accused sometimes leads people to gather at the court to express their outrage.
Law enforcement authorities face challenges in controlling such situations. To prevent these risks, the accused are kept in prison while their appearances are taken via the platform Zoom.
