A Chattogram court has granted a six-day remand for 12 suspects arrested in connection with an assault on police officers and obstruction of their duty.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sarkar Hasan Shahriar issued the order following a hearing around 10:30am this morning (4 December), said Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mofizur Rahman.

The 12 suspects include Joy Nath, Rumit Das, Nayan Das, Gagan Das, Sumit Das, Aman Das, Vishal Das, Sonu Methor, Sumon Das, Rajesh Das, Durlov Das, and Ajay Sutradhar Chowdhury.

The development follows a separate ruling on Monday (2 December), in which another eight suspects were placed on a seven-day remand in a related case.

Mofizur Rahman said, "The Kotwali police station applied for a seven-day remand for the suspects to facilitate interrogation in two cases of assault on police officers. After reviewing the application, the court approved a six-day remand for each."

Earlier in the day, the suspects were brought to the court under tight security. Following the hearing, they were sent to jail.

The cases stem from a violent clash on 26 November at the Chattogram court premises, which occurred after the bail plea for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the spokesperson of the Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, was denied in a sedition case.

The clash led to the fatal attack on lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, who was beaten and hacked to death.

Saiful's father Jamal Uddin subsequently filed a murder case against 31 individuals. In addition to the murder case, four other cases were filed over allegations of attacks on police officers, obstruction of their duty, assault on lawyers and court visitors and the use of explosives.
