Child killed after MP's motorcade vehicle runs him over in Cox's Bazar
An eight-year-old child was killed after a vehicle from the motorcade of newly elected lawmaker Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah Farid ran him over in Badrkhali union of Chakaria upazila on Sunday afternoon (22 February).
The deceased was identified as Md Khalid Bin Walid, 8, son of Amanul Islam, a resident of of Badarkhali.
The incident occurred around 4pm at the Ahmad Kabir Ghat area while the convoy was passing through the locality, witnesses said.
Confirming the matter, Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monir Hossain said the motorcade was travelling from Kutubdia to Maheshkhali via the Magnama Ghat in Chakaria when the third vehicle in the convoy struck the child.
Locals rescued the critically injured boy and rushed him to Badrkhali General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, he added.
Following the incident, an angry crowd vandalised several vehicles in the convoy. However, local residents escorted the lawmaker and his associates to a safe location, according to police.
Police later arrived at the scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, the OC said.
The body remains at Badarkhali General Hospital, he added.
