An activist of the Bangladesh Chhatra League was apprehended by students and handed over to police when he sat for his exams at Jahangirnagar University (JU) today (19 January).

The detainee is Shariful Islam Sohan, a 49th batch student of the university's Environmental Science Department and a resident of its AFM Kamal Uddin Hall.

Students said Sohan was initially allowed by his departmental chairman to appear in the honour's final year exam scheduled for 12pm. He, however, was apprehended by students in the midst of the exam.

Later, he was handed over to Ashulia Police Station, in the presence of the university's proctor.

"He [Sohan] has been handed over to the police. The police will take action against him as per the existing law," said JU Proctor Prof AKM Rashidul Alam.

Sakib Ahmed, a student of JU's Philosophy Department, said seeing Sohan's presence on the campus for exams today, they informed the departmental chairman that Sohan appeared on the list of the Chhatra League men who attacked students on the campus during the July movement.

Asked about the matter, Prof Jamal Uddin Runu, chairman of the Environmental Science Department, said there is no notification from the university administration regarding which of the students will not be able to sit for exams. There is no instruction regarding the Chhatra League activists either.

He noted that he didn't personally know all the individuals involved in the attacks on students.

Chhatra Dal activists on the campus alleged that leaders and activists of JU unit Chhatra League, now a banned organisation, continue to appear in exams under the sway of departmental teachers.

They reported that another Chhatra League leader of the 47th batch recently sat for his exams.
