Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested Kaushik Hossain Taposh, singer, composer and chairman of Gaan Bangla Television, from the capital's Uttara.

The arrestee was taken into the custody of Uttara East Police Station this morning (4 November), confirmed the station's Officer-in-Charge Md Mohibullah.

Later in the day, a Dhaka court sent Taposh to jail in an attempt to murder case, filed by a businessman named Ishtiaq Mahmud at the same police station on 29 September against 126 including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman passed the order after police produced Taposh before the court and sought a seven-day remand to grill him.

The court, however, sent Taposh to jail as the case investigation officer was absent during the hearing and set 6 November for the remand plea hearing.

According to case details, Taposh opposed the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and tried to undermine it by encouraging various terrorist cadres, including those of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League, by creating music against the cause.

Ishtiaq Mahmud joined a rally of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement along with others on 18 July. As the rally reached Azampur Nawab Habibullah High School in Uttara Sector-4, Awami League goons pounced on them, firing indiscriminately at the protesters.

Ishtiaq was shot in the abdomen at the time and was prevented by the goons from going to a nearby hospital. The miscreants who shot him allegedly have close ties with Taposh.

Later, Ishtiaq was rushed to Evercare Hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries.
