A safe space for Rohingya women and girls, aimed at enhancing their skills, was inaugurated in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya upazila on Monday.

The centre will raise awareness about different matters, such as the importance of family planning and prevention of early marriage among Rohingya women.

The space will also provide counselling for mental health problems, gender awareness and assistance to female victims of gender violence, as well as offer job-specific training in tailoring and handicrafts, among others.

Some 100 to 120 Rohingya women will receive training at the centre every day, read a press release.

Mahfuzur Rahman, deputy secretary of Public Administration Ministry (Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Office, Cox's Bazar) and camp in-charge, inaugurated the space in camp 4.

Addressing the event, Rahman highlighted the need to take proper steps to fulfil the objectives of launching the space. He promised to extend the necessary support of the government to Brac to achieve those objectives.

Gender-based violence (GBV) Officer of the GBV Unit of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees Terra Mackinnon, Area Director of the Humanitarian Crisis Management Programme of Brac Hasina Akhter Huq, Assistant Secretary of Public Administration Ministry (Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Office, Cox's Bazar), Assistant Camp in-charge Bimal Chakma, Manager of Brac's GBV project Shakh Jahidur Rahman, and local Rohingya woman leader Anowara Begum were present on the occasion, among others.

Hasina Akhter Huq, in her speech, hoped that Rohingya women will become self-reliant through properly utilising the facilities offered at the centre.

The centre burned in a fire in April last year. Brac reconstructed the space due to demand for it among the Rohingya community, with the support of UNHCR, and will look after as well as implement its overall activities.
