No arrests have been made so far
A case has been filed over the recovery of a dismembered body inside a drum near the gate of the National Eidgah ground adjacent to the High Court.
The body of Ashraful Haque, 42, was found in 26 pieces inside the drum yesterday (13 November), confirmed Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khaled Monsur.
He said the victim's sister, Anjina Begum, filed the case at Shahbagh Police Station today (14 November), naming the victim's friend, Jarez Mia, as the prime accused, along with several unidentified individuals.
No arrests have been made so far. Police are analysing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify and apprehend those involved, OC Monsur added.
Yesterday evening, police discovered parts of a human body inside a blue drum.
While the identity was initially unknown, investigators later confirmed through fingerprint analysis that the deceased was Md Ashraful Haque, originally from Gopalpara in Badarganj, Rangpur.
Family members arrived at the Dhaka Medical College morgue this morning to receive the body. They told reporters that Ashraful had no known enemies.
Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of DMP Ramna Division, said Ashraful came to Dhaka on Tuesday (11 November) for business purposes.
He last spoke to his family around 9pm on Wednesday, after which all communication stopped.
Ashraful was an importer of onions and potatoes from India and Myanmar and had a government licence for the business.
According to some eyewitnesses, a man arrived in a van carrying four plastic drums around 2pm yesterday and left two of them at that spot before driving away.
At least four hours later, when a foul smell started emanating from the drums, a person began shouting.
Police personnel on duty at the High Court main gate came and opened the drums. Initially, they saw rice inside. After removing the rice, they found dismembered body parts wrapped in polythene bags.
Shahbagh Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mainul Islam Khan said the body was found around 6pm.
Later, around 7:15pm, the CID's Crime Scene Unit arrived at the site and confirmed the identity of the victim through his fingerprints.
