Dismembered body of a man found in plastic drum near National Eidgah gate
The victim’s name is Md Ashraful Haque, 43. His residence was in Rangpur’s Badarganj upazila.
Police have recovered the dismembered body of a man from a plastic drum near the main gate of the National Eidgah, adjacent to the High Court area, in Dhaka this evening (13 November).
Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Ramna Division) Md Masud Alam told The Business Standard, "One of the drums contained the body cut into numerous pieces and the other was filled with rice.
He said they were reviewing the footage of the nearby CCTV cameras to learn more about the incident.
Meanwhile, the deceased has been identified as Md Ashraful Haque (43), a trader from Rangpur.
Ashraful's identity was confirmed through fingerprint analysis, said police.
olice said Ashraful, son of Md Abdur Rashid and Eshra Khatun of Shyampur Nayapara Gopalpur under Badarganj Police Station in Rangpur, came to Dhaka on 11 November for business purposes.
Before leaving home, he reportedly told his family that he was travelling to Dhaka to collect payments from clients. He was known to import ginger, onion, and garlic from India, and had financial dealings with traders in different parts of the country, including Dhaka.
Law enforcers said they are yet to determine who killed Ashraful or why his body was dumped near the High Court.
According to some eyewitnesses, a man arrived in a van carrying four plastic drums around 2pm and left two of them at that spot before driving away. At least four hours later, when a foul smell started emanating from the drums, a person began shouting.
Police personnel on duty at the High Court main gate came and opened the drums. Initially, they saw rice inside. After removing the rice, they found dismembered body parts wrapped in polythene bags.
Shahbagh Police Station's Inspector (investigation) Mainul Islam Khan said the body was found around 6pm.
Later, around 7:15pm, the CID's Crime Scene Unit arrived at the site and confirmed the identity of the victim using the fingerprints of the body.
