Chief Adviser (CA) Muhammad Yunus is set to visit China on 26 March and his visit will take Bangladesh-China relations to a new height, the CA's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said today (16 March).
Bangladesh wants to take its relations with China to a new height aiming to turn Bangladesh into a manufacturing hub, Shafiqul said, adding, "They [China] think that this would be the most important visit by the Bangladeshi leader."
"On 27 March, Prof Yunus will address the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) conference focusing on the changing role of Asia in the world," he told a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka this afternoon.
Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Yao Wen today called on Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna to discuss the chief adviser's upcoming China tour.
Highlighting the outcomes of the meeting, Shafiqul said the Boao Forum for Asia is called Davos of the East where top leaders of Asia and different countries and chief executive officers (CEOs) of giant global firms participate.
On the sidelines of the forum, he said, the CA is likely to have meetings with CEOs of some companies.
The first bilateral meeting between CA Yunus and Chinese President Xi Jinping will be held in Beijing on 28 March, the press secretary said.
He said issues related to bilateral interest will be discussed in the meeting.
Last week, the foreign ministry shared a preliminary schedule of the trip, which said that apart from the BFA conference in Boao, south China's Hainan Province, the CA is expected to meet with the executive vice president of China's State Council on 27 March afternoon.
On 29 March, the CA is scheduled to attend an event at Peking University in the morning before returning to Bangladesh that night.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam said that the relevant concerned sides are currently working on the bilateral agendas to be discussed during the high-level visit.
He added that the foreign ministry will hold a curtain-raiser press briefing before the trip to provide further details.
An inter-ministerial meeting, chaired by the foreign secretary, was held at the foreign ministry last week to discuss Bangladesh's agenda for the upcoming talks with the Chinese president.
