BTMA President Showkat Aziz Russell to lead progressive panel in FBCCI election
Sources close to the FBCCI indicated that the organisation is unlikely to hold its election before the upcoming national polls
Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) President Showkat Aziz Russell has announced his candidacy for the upcoming election of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) as the leader of the Progotishil Byabsayee Parishad (Progressive Businessmen Council) panel.
The announcement was made at an event organised by the panel at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Centre in Dhaka today (26 October).
Addressing the gathering, Russell said that if elected, his panel would work to support around four crore businessmen across the country and prioritise creating a more business-friendly environment.
"The biggest challenge facing the business community today is a lack of leadership. In the past, many business leaders ignored the problems of entrepreneurs while travelling abroad… The time has come for businessmen to work together in unity," he said.
Representatives from various business organisations affiliated with the FBCCI were present at the event.
Government-appointed administrator Hafizur Rahman has been overseeing the FBCCI since the end of the previous committee's term.
However, the election could not be held within either the initial or extended tenure of the administrator, and a revised election date has yet to be announced.
Sources close to the FBCCI indicated that the organisation is unlikely to hold its election before the upcoming national polls.
The last FBCCI president was Mahbubur Rahman, former president of the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who left office after 5 August when an administrator was appointed to lead the organisation.
