Opposition to march on 6 demands from Dhaka to Ctg on 5 Sept 

An 11-party opposition alliance will hold a long march from Dhaka to Chattogram on 5 September, pressing six demands including implementation of the referendum mandate, control of rising prices and improvement of the law and order situation.

The march will conclude with a rally at the port city's historic Laldighi Maidan at 5:15pm on the same day.

The programme was announced at a press conference at the city Jamaat office today (3 September). Muhammad Shahjahan, assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami and director of its Chattogram region, read out the written statement.

The demands also include a fair and impartial trial of the July massacre; an end to electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser shortages and an end to politicisation of state institutions and the administration.

He said the programme was being organised to press people's legitimate demands and strengthen calls for state reforms amid the country's current political, economic and law and order situation.

"People's opinion and the referendum verdict cannot be ignored under any circumstances," Shahjahan said, calling for the verdict to be implemented quickly.

He also demanded impartial investigations and trials into all killings and human rights violations, regardless of political identity.

The Jamaat leader said electricity and gas shortages were disrupting industries, businesses and people's daily lives and called for a permanent solution to the crisis. 

On commodity prices, Shahjahan said prices of rice, pulses, edible oil, vegetables, fish and meat were increasingly beyond people's purchasing power. 

The alliance demanded effective measures to curb theft, robbery, terrorism, extortion, drug trafficking and other crimes.

Organisers said activists and ordinary people from different parts of the country would join the march, with participants from the port city and district expected to attend the rally.
