BNP condemns attack on Nur, urges restraint amid political tensions
“I wish Nur a swift recovery and urge the government for a lawful investigation into the incident,” Tarique Rahman concluded

BNP has strongly condemned the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President and former Ducsu Vice-President Nurul Haque Nur, who was critically injured during clashes between activists of the Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad in Dhaka's Kakrail yesterday evening (29 August).
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, in a statement today, said, "We are in an extremely delicate period of democratic transition, for which the first step is national elections. Collectively, we must ensure that destabilising incidents, such as what happened today, do not spread over and push us off this path towards democracy."
"Pro-democracy stakeholders, which include the BNP and its allies, must exercise restraint and tolerance. The true spirit of last year's mass uprising must prevail. The country must break from its shackles of mob rule and current instability," he added.
"If we are to take Bangladesh forward, we should maintain vigilance against mob culture, uphold the rule of law, and build a peaceful and stable country. Only through empowering the people in a democratic pathway and ensuring justice, equality and dignity for all, can we succeed as a united nation," he further said.
"I wish Nur a swift recovery and urge the government for a lawful investigation into the incident," he concluded.
Clashes broke out in front of the Jatiyo Party's central office in Kakrail yesterday evening, leaving several people injured, including Nurul Haque Nur, who was later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in "critical" condition.
Jatiyo Party leaders alleged that activists of the Gono Odhikar Parishad launched an attack on them while marching past the party office.
On the other hand, Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders claimed that it was the Jatiyo Party supporters who first hurled bricks and stones at their procession, provoking the clash.
Following the violence, a large number of law enforcement personnel, including army and police, were deployed to the scene to restore order, police said.
