BNP aims to build a truly democratic, discrimination-free Bangladesh: Fakhrul
"We lost the nation's greatest sons in 1971," says the secretary general of BNP after paying tribute to the intellectuals at the Martyred Intellectuals' Memorial in Mirpur

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said his party aims to make the best use of the opportunity created by the fall of "fascist forces" to build Bangladesh into a truly democratic, modern and discrimination-free state.
"On this day in 1971, the Pakistani forces abducted and killed Bangladesh's eminent journalists, intellectuals, professors, scientists, and distinguished members of civil society. We lost the nation's greatest sons in 1971," he told reporters after paying tribute to the intellectuals at the Martyred Intellectuals' Memorial in Mirpur this morning (14 December).

BNP secretary general said, "The people of Bangladesh fought in 1971 to build an independent, democratic, and prosperous Bangladesh. This was made possible through the declaration of the Liberation War by the martyred President Ziaur Rahman.
"On behalf of BNP, our party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, and acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, we all have come together today to pay our respects," he added.
Hoping that an election will be arranged soon as per the people's wishes, Fakhrul said, "We are always hopeful. An interim government has already been established, and we are cooperating. We hope an election will be arranged very soon, according to the people's will.
"The people will have the opportunity to choose their representatives through a free, fair, and impartial election," he added.
