BGMEA and BKMEA setting up temporary warehouse for safe keeping of imported goods
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) have taken initiative to set up a "Rubb Hall" – a temporary warehouse – for the safe storage of imported raw materials and other goods, according to a press release issued yesterday (26 October).
The move comes after a devastating fire on 18 October severely damaged the import shed at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Cargo Village, rendering it unusable and disrupting regular import and export operations in the garment sector.
BGMEA and BKMEA took a joint initiative to establish the Rubb Hall at the newly built Terminal 3, which is not yet fully operational, to resume storage of imported goods.
BGMEA has already issued a work order to a supplier for the installation of the temporary warehouse and its implementation is expected to be completed shortly.
Earlier, on 20 October, a meeting was held involving Adviser to the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism Sheikh Bashiruddin, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan and BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem and senior leaders from both organisations.
The meeting decided to establish the temporary facility to safeguard imported goods and restore smooth import operations for the garment industry.
