BCL responsible for ban on student politics at Buet: Ducsu VP

The vice-president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) and leaders of left-leaning student organisations on Saturday blamed Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for the ban on the student politics at Buet.

They also said the same demand is being raised at other universities across the country.

They came up with comments at separate press conferences held at the Madhu's Canteen of the university in the afternoon.

Speaking at a press conference, Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur said, "Buet students demanded a ban on organisational student politics following Chhatra League's terrorist activities which led to the killing of Abrar Fahad."

"There's student politics in all countries and will remain so. Election to student unions must be held for sound and merit-based student politics which creates student leadership in the country," he added.

Nur also alleged that not only students but also university administration is responsible for tainting the student politics as authorities do not perform their due duties.

He placed a five-point demand, including the trial of Abrar's killers in a special tribunal, stopping mass-room culture, ensuring democratic atmosphere on campuses, holding student union polls at all colleges and universities across the country and recruiting neutral teachers at important posts, including that of VC, to ensure student-friendly environment on campuses.

Meanwhile, left-leaning student bodies, led by Progressive Alliance, protested the ban on the student politics by the authorities of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet).

They claimed that the protesting students are not furious against student politics but BCL, the ruling party's student wing.

The organisations also demanded banning the BCL activities at all universities across the country.
