Mohammad Shariful Islam appointed BUET pro-vice-chancellor
Professor Dr Mohammad Shariful Islam of the Department of Civil Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology has been appointed the university's new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for four years.
According to a press release, he assumed office on 25 July.
On 22 July, the Ministry of Education issued a notification confirming his appointment. He succeeds Professor Dr Abdul Hasib Chowdhury and becomes the fourth Pro-Vice-Chancellor of BUET.

Professor Islam graduated with distinction in civil engineering from BUET in 1997, joined the university as a lecturer that year, and was promoted to professor in 2013.
He currently serves as Director of the Research and Innovation Centre for Science and Engineering at BUET.
Professor Islam earned his PhD from Saitama University, Japan, in 2002 and completed two years of postdoctoral research there.
Born in Kotbari, Cumilla, he secured 12th place on the combined merit list in the SSC examination in 1988 at Government Laboratory High School, Cumilla, and second place on the combined merit list in the 1990 HSC examination from Cumilla Victoria Government College.
Professor Islam has published research papers and developed knowledge products, codes and design materials in journals, books, conferences and seminars in Bangladesh and abroad.
According to the release, he has received 29 national and international awards and honours for his academic and research work.
His research includes vetiver-based bioengineering technology, which has been used in infrastructure development and environmental conservation projects in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia.
