Appeal hearings on candidacy continue at EC for eighth day

The Election Commission (EC) today (17 January) continued the eighth day of appeal hearings against Returning Officers' decisions on the acceptance and rejection of nomination papers for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections.

The full Commission, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, is conducting the hearings.
According to the EC schedule, a total of 100 appeals—bearing serial numbers from 511 to 610—are set to be heard today between 10:00am and 5:00pm, with a one-hour recess at noon.
On Friday, the seventh day of hearings, the Commission heard 43 appeals. Of these, 18 appeals filed against the rejection of nomination papers were allowed, while 17 were dismissed. Four appeals were kept pending for verdicts. In addition, four appeals filed against the acceptance of other candidates' nomination papers were dismissed.
As per the schedule, the appeal hearings will conclude tomorrow, January 18 (Sunday), with the disposal of appeals numbered from 611 to 645, along with the remaining pending appeals.
A total of 645 appeals were filed with the Election Commission challenging the acceptance and rejection of nomination papers for the upcoming election.
On the final day of scrutiny on January 4, Returning Officers declared 1,842 nomination papers valid and rejected 723 out of the total 2,568 nomination papers submitted across 300 parliamentary constituencies.
