Adequate stocks in place to keep Ramadan market stable: Commerce minister
Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir further said the government would work sincerely over the next five years, making use of every single day to advance Bangladesh’s global standing.
Commerce, Industries, Textiles, and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said the government has sufficient food stocks to keep market prices stable during Ramadan.
"The commerce ministry's key responsibility is to keep the prices of essential commodities stable. This responsibility becomes even more significant during Ramadan," he said.
"When we assumed office, there was little time to take special measures ahead of the fasting month. However, the positive aspect is that the amount of food stock we currently have is sufficient to maintain price stability in the market," he added.
He made the remarks this morning (20 February) while responding to questions from journalists after exchanging greetings with officials of various government departments and party leaders at Sylhet Osmani International Airport.
Responding to a question about plans for Sylhet, the minister said, "I have spoken about Sylhet's development plan throughout my election campaign and manifesto. I want to work on implementing issues that are directly related to improving the quality of life of the people of Sylhet. In particular, initiatives will be taken to create employment, expand IT-related professions, and establish an AI centre."
"Our neighbouring countries have adopted major digital schemes. Government officials and employees are being given AI training. If we lag behind, others will look at us with sympathy in today's world. We must achieve competitiveness at the global level," he added.
The minister further said the government would work sincerely over the next five years, making use of every single day to advance Bangladesh's global standing.
Replying to a question about employment generation at the Sylhet IT Park, he said, "Investment is necessary to create jobs. To attract investment, we must improve communication infrastructure, reduce bureaucratic red tape and ensure a supportive environment, including political stability."
He added that special policy support is needed for both expatriate and domestic investors in Sylhet.
"We are working on these issues. Visible implementation will be seen very soon," he said.
