ACC sues NBR member Belal Chowdhury over undeclared assets worth Tk9.57cr

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against Mohammad Belal Hossain Chowdhury, a member of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), on charges of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income and concealing asset information.
Confirming the development, ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain today (7 October) said the commission found undeclared assets worth Tk4.6 crore and Tk4.97 crore under Belal's name.
According to ACC sources, Belal previously served as commissioner of the Custom House Benapole and as director general of the Duty Exemption and Drawback Office of NBR.
He is currently serving as an NBR member (VAT Implementation and IT).
An ACC investigation found that Belal declared Tk8.83 crore worth of assets in the statement he submitted, while investigators identified Tk13.43 crore in assets in his name, indicating that Tk4.60 crore had been concealed.
The investigation also revealed evidence of assets worth Tk4.97 crore acquired beyond known sources of income.
The ACC report stated that Chowdhury obtained these assets through irregularities and corruption by misusing his official authority.
A case has been filed against him under Sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
