8 injured in BNP-Jamaat clash in Chattogram
The incident took place around 9pm in the Fazilkhanr Hat area of Barouthan union following a political altercation, according to locals.
At least eight people were injured in a clash between leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Karnaphuli upazila of Chattogram last night (20 February).
The incident took place around 9pm in the Fazilkhanr Hat area of Barouthan union following a political altercation, according to locals.
The injured were identified as Shahedul Alam, Md Emon, Md Monjur, and Mohammad Faruk of BNP and its associate organisations; and Mohammad Enam, Sajjad Hossain, Mohammad Salahuddin, and Mohammad Abir, activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir.
Shahedul Alam was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. The others received first aid at local clinics.
Following the clash, leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate organisations brought out a protest procession in the Fazilkhanr Hat area, creating tension in the locality.
Md Alamgir, secretary of the Karnaphuli upazila youth wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, alleged that their leaders and activists had been facing threats after the arrest of a BNP activist with drugs ahead of the election earlier this month.
He claimed the attack was carried out in a planned manner as a continuation of that incident.
In response, upazila Jubo Dal convener Nurul Islam alleged that activists of Jamaat carried out a sudden attack over election-related disputes, leaving four of their activists injured.
Officer-in-Charge of Karnaphuli Police Station Shahinur Alam said additional police had been deployed in the area and the situation was normal.
"No written complaint has been filed at the police station by any party regarding this clash so far. Once a complaint is received, swift legal action will be taken following an investigation," he said.
