At least five people were killed in two separate road accidents in Khulna's Dumuria Upazila and Chakaria Upazila in Cox's Bazar between last night (16 May) and this morning (17 May).

In Khulna, the accident happened in front of the Dumuria Fire Service and Civil Defence station on the Khulna-Satkhira highway in the upazila at around 11am, police said.

The accident left four others injured, who are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, said police.

However, the deceased could not be identified immediately.

Dumuria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Masud Rana said, "Seven people were heading towards Khulna from Satkhira's Koyra upazila on a Mahindra, which collided with an oil-laden lorry in front of the Fire Service station."

"One person was killed on the spot, and the other two died after they were taken to the hospital by Fire Service personnel. The four injured people have been sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment," he added.

Meanwhile, two people were killed when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a truck on the Surajpur-Yangchha road in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar at around 11:30pm last night.

The deceased were identified as Shahidul Islam, 30, and Mohammad Kawsar, 35. Both were from Chakaria.

Chakaria Police Station OC Md Shafiqul Islam said the accident took place when the auto-rickshaw was returning to Chakaria from Bandarban's Lama.

"Reaching the eastern side of the Surajpur Bridge in Chakaria, the auto-rickshaw slipped while moving past a pile of concrete and collided with the truck coming from the opposite side," he said.

"Two auto-rickshaw passengers were killed on the spot, while the driver and other passengers were injured, who have been admitted to a local hospital," the OC added.

He said the bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their families.
