4 killed in separate gunfights in Teknaf

Four people were killed in separate gunfights with police and members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early Saturday.

Among them, three suspected drug traders were killed in gunfight with BGB men in Hnila and one in gunfight with police in Hoyaikong.

Teknaf-2 BGB Commander Lt Col Mohammad Faisal said tipped off, a team of BGB took position in the area adjacent to the Naf River around 3am. At one stage, four to five people reached the area by a boat crossing the river.

On suspicion, when the BGB tam challenged them, they opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate in self defence, triggering the gunfight. Three BGB members sustained injuries.

After the gunfight, three injured men were found from the spot. They were taken to Teknaf Hospital where the doctor declared them dead.

The BGB team also recovered 1.80 lakh pieces yaba tablets, two pistols, two rounds of cartridges, a bullet shell and a sharp weapon from the spot.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station said that Musa Akbar, 36, a resident of Tulatoli area, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Hoyaikong. Three police members also got injured. Locally made weapon, 6,000 yaba tablets, three rounds of cartridges and six bullet shells were recovered from the scene.

Doctor of the emergency department of the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, K Alam, said, "The BGB and the police brought four men with gunshot injuries. The injured BGB members and policemen have been released after treatment."
