A separate police team stationed nearby later arrived at the scene and rescued the injured officers
Two police officers were assaulted while attempting to arrest a warrant-listed suspect in a narcotics case in Savar yesterday (9 June).
The injured officers – Sub-Inspector (SI) SM Shamim and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mashiur Rahman Khan of Savar Model Police Station – were later rescued and taken to Savar Upazila Health Complex, where they received medical treatment.
Shamim said, "Yesterday evening, ASI Mashiur Rahman and I went to the Boktarpur area to arrest Rafiqul Islam, a suspect wanted in a narcotics case.
"At around 7:30pm, we succeeded in arresting him. However, when we attempted to handcuff him, Rafiqul and seven to eight others attacked us with bricks and sticks.
"Shortly afterwards, more people joined the attack, and a group of around 40 to 50 individuals assaulted us before forcibly freeing Rafiqul and fleeing the scene."
A separate police team stationed nearby later arrived at the scene and rescued the injured officers.
Dr Fardin Abdur Razzaq, a physician in the emergency department of Savar Upazila Health Complex, said two police personnel were brought in at around 8:30pm with injuries.
He added that both officers had visible injury marks on various parts of their bodies.
Inspector Nur Mohammad of Savar Model Police Station told The Business Standard that the attack occurred unexpectedly while police officers were attempting to execute an arrest warrant against a suspect.
The injured police officers are currently out of danger, he added.
